Not your mother's workout... How to get Sexy for the summer
So, here we are 4-months into the New Year and already I've started hanging clothes on my tread-mill and putting on my tennis shoes to go for a quick jog... to my car to go and check the mail. When will this madness end? I know that there are plenty of fun workouts that I can do that won't get boring after the second month...why oh why can't I just do it?
You don't even have to open up the magazines to read the headlines, "Your Best Body Ever", "Flat-Belly Foods", "Get ABS and Buns of Steel" and on and on. Everyone knows that the beginning of the year is the best months for health clubs and gyms because everyone wants to start the New Year with a better body, heart, mind everything.

What about now that the newness has worn out and we're bored with the 30-minutes of cardio on the stationary bike followed by the anorexic chic flexing her leg behind her head in yoga or the white girl teaching the hip hop dance class. (Sorry, this is the one race issue that I've allowed myself...see next article).
I think that maybe I have found a solution and all you need is a pole. Yep, you heard me right. A stripper pole, not naked exercise, but add some music and look out now you have conquered more than one task. I have yet to meet a man that does not enjoy seeing his woman partake in a little well-done strip-tease show. If you look around your area, I am sure that you will find a place that actually teaches a class on this.
There are also studios popping up all over the place that offer classes on belly dancing and exotic dancing. Think about it, when was the last time you saw a chunky striper, upside down on a pole?
Seriously, pole dancing is considered to be a form of gymnastics. It not only provides a great cardio workout, you can burn up to as much at 500 calories per hour. If you can find a class near you expect to spend $100-$300 for a four to six-week class.
Belly Dancing is great for the mid-section. If you work at it for an hour, you can burn from 250-500 calories. Classes range from $50-$200, there are also videos, and DVD's available to teach you in the privacy of your own home. The same with exotic dancing, there are a ton of products on the market and on the internet that you can buy to help you with this form of exercise. My unconventional method would be to go and hire a stripper to teach you how to strip.
Think about the benefits to both parties. She can learn a new skill, teaching. You on the other hand, may be able to borrow some of her fun costumes and stripper pumps without having to dish out any extra cash. Besides, who amongst us can say that they have a stripper for a teacher?
Whatever you decide, make the choice to get up get out and do something. Have fun. Exercise does not have to be boring to work. Work what you've got and then...imagine what you can add to your profile...minus the pictures...make those private. I don't need to see all that.

And so another summer is upon us and I keep trying to stay in as good of shape as I was last year. It seems to get more difficult each year and requires subtle changes in my routine and my diet. But it seems to be working. A little each day.

After finding out that I had diabetes, I knew I had to improve my health. But my nutritionist told me the most valuable information. Do not look at it as a diet but a lifestyle change. It took more than 30 days to gain weight so it will take more than 30 days to take it off. But most of all take it one day at a time and set little goals. You will be far more productive.

I live for summer! I'm hoping to relocate to the Rio Grande Valley; as a Dallas native, I miss the summers of my youth and hate the winters in Nebraska. Gimme SUN!!!

Wow. Nice. I started learning bellydancing in March, and have kept it up at least once a week since. My confidence & flexibility is better. I'd love to try the pole workout too. Anyone starting a class in Cleveland? LOL

I am a vertical dancer. And everyone always compliments me about my body and how fit I am. I enjoy it also while I stay in shape I am more of an advance vertical dancer so I work out every muscle in my body. It's great.

I needed to read this! I am constantly finding new ways to stay in shape and I invested in cute, shiny red "exercise" pole for my apartment and it has been great! my arms are leaner, I feel confident and I would highly recommend getting one. ONE PROBLEM THOUGH! - I took some great, tasteful pictures to spice up my profile with a note to my girls to get one - the picture was approved by the moderators and I got lots of responses especially from women saying asking how to get one etc. The guys seemed to like too. BUT this one response really, really shocked me. It was sent by "WhiteSamuria" - a 39 Year old man from Alexandria, VA.He wrote :- ...ya'll black women are so dissapointing ! a pole in your bedroom so classless ! ya'll just have no class , no morals at all! guess a monkey needs something to swing on". I was naturally very offended because of the undertone of his statements but I remained calm and told him not to let one, classless monkey ruin his chances of finding true love here on this site since there are some great women out there. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! I REALLY NEEDED TO READ IT!

I know that the best thing for me to get/stay in shape is to do a little bit at a time and to incorporate fitness into my life. You get what you put into it of course, so if you want six-pack abs and buns of steel serious exercise and strict dieting is the only way (in spite of what the TV hucksters try to sell us). But a start is a start and finding a way to make fitness fun, or at least easy, makes good sense. I use my bicycle as often as I can as transportation and that has become long rides in addition to getting from here to there. Walking in bad weather and using an umbrella or dressing warmly in winter replaces driving a mile to the drugstore. Even if I decide that triple fudge sludge is the only answer, walking to get it beats driving. Starting with a few crunches and adding a few every day led to over 200 almost daily. Doing some work with weights and finding a routine I could maintain was the way to go for me, rather than going for broke and breaking something. Most of us have busy lives, but we have time for a phone call or two in the evening. Taking our celly with us and spending a half-hour chatting and walking is a routine that can be maintained if we find that an hour of aerobics is too much. Pole dancing could be a good way to go too. The added benefit is that you might spice up your sex life and that burns 6 calories or so a minute (be careful though that stopwatch can be a buzz killer in the bedroom).

Can't say that I've ever had a stripper as a teacher, but one of my best friends in high school actually was a stripper for a little while when we were 19-20 y.o. I do admit, she had great thighs and arm muscles from the pole, and could do the upside down thing and slide down using just the leg muscles(no arms!). It looks like geat exercise! The belly dancing is a great workout for the core, and I have one great exercise for the glutes(booty); it can be done at work, at home, in front of the computer, or just before going to sleep, which I call the "Sneaky Butt Crunch" Squeeze the butt muscles together, hold for a 10 count, then relax. Start at 2 sets of 10(20 crunches), and work up to 10 sets of 10(100). I do them a couple of times a day, every other day. To add to the workout, tighten your ab muscles while squeezing. I had to do this as therapy when I hurt my back, my hips became lopsided when my left thigh went out of joint, and my left glute muscles needed to be tightened up again after it was popped back into place(as ugly as it sounds, it felt that ugly too!). The other great butt lifter are the heel-ups(I don't know its proper name). Kneel on a soft mat or your bed. While kneeling, lift your left leg, bending at the knee. With the knee bent at 90 degrees, raise your foot towards the ceiling, keeping the foot horizontal(a donkey kick)and your calf straight. Do 5 sets of 10 on one leg, then repeat with the right foot. When you get good at that, instead of being on hands and knees, drop to the forarms, hands flat on the surface, still on your knees, THEN repeat the donkey kicks to the ceiling. a great workout for the glutes and thighs.

Motivation is the key. You just gotta find out what motivates you. If you wanna look sexy by summer, drink plenty of water, get plenty cardio, and do squats everytime you go to the bathroom...hehehehehe.

I should say that I don't adhere to my Mother's workout. She just turned 92 a couple of days ago, so buzzing down the hall to the singalong is about as far as she goes to stay in shape these days. God bless her! LOL
